“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

Have you struggled or do you know someone who has struggled with an addiction? You’re not alone and whatever the addiction – it separates us  from God.  It makes us feel like we have something to hide, it hurts our health or the health of those around us, and sometimes it goes against the Word of God.

It’s natural to want to hide the problems we face. But in order to overcome our vices it’s crucial that we face them. When our problems are kept in the dark they continue to haunt us, but when they are brought into the light we have the ability to defeat them. Faith can help us do this!

1 John 1:5 says, “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” We also see in Scripture that we have been called, like God, to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:16; John 8:12). When we decide to follow Christ, we are deciding to let his Light shine on us, illuminating the hidden areas and helping us have victory over sin and darkness.

Here are four ways we can allow our Christian faith to help us overcome our addictions:

  1. Confess to God and repentWe may be able to hide our struggles from those around us, but we can’t hide them from God. Thankfully, we don’t have to. I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Redemption is a process, and it begins with repentance. God will forgive us, every time we go to him with our sin. God understands the struggles we face and he’s willing to help.
  2. Ask for God’s continued helpGod tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Reflect on this truth for a moment. Isn’t it incredible that in our weakest times we can count on God to be strong for us? When we rely on God we can conquer anything. Romans 8:37 promises that “we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
  3. Commit to changeGod has given us a free will. It can be difficult to tame our wills; but having a free will means that we can make decisions to change our lives! From the decision to accept Jesus, to daily saying “no” to temptation, we have the ability to commit to a new lifestyle. Commit to making the right choices each day for helping you overcome addiction. You will never be perfect, but God’s grace is there, and he will give you strength to continue on.
  4. Seek intentional communityJames 5:16 tells us to “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Not only is it important to turn to God with your sins, but it’s also important to confide in a friend you can trust or find a  support group.  Participating in intentional Christian community is helpful because God uses us to help one another. Find someone you can trust to listen, offer sound advice, and pray with you!

Remember, anything is possible with God (Matthew 19:26)! He will help you overcome whatever you’re facing. Also keep in mind that redemption is a process – it takes time to be healed and transformed into whom God has created us to be. Don’t let yourself become discouraged – continue fighting the good fight (1 Timothy 6:12). God will be by your side giving you the strength that you need.

Make this your prayer today:

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” – Psalm 103:2-5 –
